Hardware Test Automation and Reliability Engineer
Alameda, California, United States
Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience’s hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. To support progress across our industry, we provide state-of-the-art components and vertically integrated infrastructure for others to build on via Science Foundry.
We’re looking for a Hardware Test Automation and Reliability Engineer with 3-5 years of professional experience to take ownership of our test infrastructure for embedded medical devices. This role is perfect for those who thrive on bridging hardware, firmware, and software domains. If you consider yourself a full-stack electronics engineer, comfortable with testing PCBs, writing Python scripts, understanding C/C++ firmware, and setting up automated test pipelines, you’ll be an ideal fit.
You will architect and maintain the testing backbone that guarantees our products are reliable, safe, and regulatory-compliant. In this high-ownership role, you’ll influence testing strategy from the ground up, with a clear path to grow into a Test Infrastructure Architect position.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain automated test systems for embedded medical devices
- Write Python-based test scripts and integrate with existing C/C++ firmware testing environments
- Develop Linux shell scripts and use Linux-based tools to support test infrastructure and automation workflows
- Set up and manage CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions for automated testing, deployment, and reporting
- Plan and execute reliability analysis to assess product performance, longevity, and failure modes under different operating conditions
- Collaborate with cross-functional hardware, firmware, and software engineering teams to define and improve testing strategies and best practices
- Ensure all testing processes and infrastructure meet ISO62304 (software lifecycle), ISO60601 (electrical safety) and ISO14791 (Risk Management for Medical Devices) standards for medical devices
- Take ownership of the test infrastructure roadmap, from requirements definition to implementation and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline
- 3-5 years of experience in quality, test, validation or full stack electronics engineering roles
- Proficiency in Python and working knowledge of C/C++ firmware
- Strong experience with Linux utilities, bash scripting, and Linux-based development environments
- Proficiency in fundamental electronics troubleshooting, utilizing laboratory equipment.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively across teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the medical device industry or other highly regulated environments
- Experience conducting system reliability analysis using methods such as FMEA or FTA
- Knowledge of embedded systems testing methodologies and frameworks
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD workflows, ideally GitHub Actions
- Familiarity with PCB CAD tools (e.g., KiCad, Altium Designer, Orcad)
- Working knowledge of ISO62304 and ISO60601 standards
