Scope

Simultaneous retinal imaging and optical stimulation at near single-cell resolution

Scope helps researchers answer fundamental questions about how the retina works at a cellular level.

By combining retinal imaging and stimulation in a single device, Scope provides an unrivaled ability to simultaneously deliver optical power and observe the effect at a near single-cell resolution.

Science Corporation makes Scope available to select academic, research, and commercial collaborators for use in optogenetic and ophthalmic research. We support our collaborators dedicated to improving the lives of people with debilitating medical conditions.

Three systems combine into one innovative device

Retinal imager

Monitors the health of the retina in real time

Projection optics

Directs the beam with eye tracking and focuses light into the eye

Light engine

Generates and patterns a specially tuned beam of light for projection

Key features

  • Retinal imaging

Retinal imaging delivers health diagnostics and displays feedback to researchers and physicians.

Fluoresce your reporter in vivo to understand exactly where your gene therapy is being expressed. Characterize disease progression and any adverse events down to the single-cell level, and monitor the health of the retina in real time.

  • Dynamic Eyebox

Automatic eye tracking and projection beam steering achieve a larger eyebox and better ergonomics.

Simplify calibration and alignment while giving the patient a much wider range of supported eye orientations and a more comfortable experience. The eye tracker and steering mirrors allow for the projection beam to be painted precisely on the correct location on the retina, even if the patient moves.

  • Adaptable light engine

Adaptable light engine can be configured to wavelength needed to activate therapy.

Scope's optical path is designed to work with a wide range of wavelengths, from 450 nm well into the near-infrared.

  • Near single-cell resolution

Visualization and tracking of retinal features at the same time as stimulation can improve targeting regions of interest.

Spot sizes as small as 15 microns allow for precise stimulation of individual cells, while the wide field of view allows for simultaneous imaging of a large field of view on the retina.

  • Automatic power shutoff

Power automatically shuts off in the event of unsafe laser irradiance to ensure retinal health in accordance with national standards (ANSI Z136.1).

Safety enforced in hardware ensures patient safety while allowing ready access to the broadest range of science without re-certification.

Collaborate with Science Corporation and give your gene therapy its best chance of success

The outcome of a clinical trial should reflect the quality of your transgene and expression, not how well an early wearable works. We developed Scope to put an upper bound on the visual performance achievable with our gene therapy after realizing that other gene therapy trials were limited by the tools available to measure their success, not the gene therapy itself.
