Mechanical Engineer
Alameda, California, United States | Paris, France
Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience’s hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. To support progress across our industry, we provide state-of-the-art components and vertically integrated infrastructure for others to build on via Science Foundry.
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the development of our devices and systems. Specific projects span therapeutic product development, in vivo and in vitro experimental infrastructure, microfluidic systems, robotics, surgical tools and benchtop fixtures. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter who thinks outside the box, is comfortable with open-ended problems, and is able to pivot quickly. Work at Science is highly collaborative, cross functional, and encompasses the range from micro (we often work in microns) to macro (some systems weigh hundreds of pounds).
Role & Responsibilities:
- Design and build innovative electromechanical systems - from medical grade wearables to specialized research tools and surgical equipment
- Validate system performance in lab, wet-lab, and operating room settings
- Rapidly refine and iterate on concepts by taking ownership of fabrication and testing pipelines
- Facilitate active collaboration with electrical, optical, software, microfabrication, biology, quality, and surgical teams to deliver highly functional products to market
Key qualifications:
- Demonstrated excellence in CAD software (Solidworks strongly preferred)
- Working knowledge of first principles across precision mechanical design, materials science, design for manufacturing (DFM), optomechanics and microfluidics
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex, ambiguous design spaces to deliver highly functional systems
- Demonstrated hands-on fabrication ability and an intimate understanding of DFMA across rapid prototyping, CNC machining and injection molding. We want to see what complex systems you have built
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience developing automated fluidic or optical sensing systems, including integration of sensors and development of custom components
- Experience developing custom surgical tools
- Experience developing wearable devices
- Experience developing implantable systems
- Experience with FEA and simulation (stress/strain, thermal, and or flow)
- Comfort with basic machine shop and rapid prototyping tools
- Familiarity with biomaterials, ISO 10993, and surgical techniques and procedures
- Experience with early start-ups and/or the medical device industry; Class III device development experience and familiarity with ISO 15485, IEC 60601 or similar
