We are looking for a hands-on mechanical engineer to develop novel & scalable BCI research equipment at Science. Work includes ideating, designing, fabricating, and maintaining experimental setups and infrastructure in the vivarium. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with the animal care team to maintain our high standards for animal health and well-being, while working with scientists to push the complexity and capability of our research. 

Role responsibilities:

  • Design and build new electromechanical systems for automated behavior training.  
  • Work closely with researchers to optimize experimental setup and data collection 
  • Troubleshoot and improve existing setups: from implant-scale to room-scale 

Key qualifications:

  • 3 years minimum professional experience in a mechanical design role
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks preferred)
  • Experience with microcontroller-based electronics 
  • Demonstrated fabrication skills - show us what you have built
  • Strong communication skills 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Experience working with animals in a research setting. 
  • Experience working with surgical or biological requirements 
  • Programming knowledge (Python preferred) 

Salary/Pay Range:

Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role.  We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $110,000 - $180,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
