Science is looking for an in-house Head of Construction who can operate as a general contractor. This person will lead our ongoing construction projects and ensure that our facilities support research and development as our work grows and changes. To be a successful construction manager you will work to bridge the gap between the many facets needed to construct, maintain, and adapt a life sciences building in addition to closely managing and optimizing the work of subcontractors.
Role responsibilities:
- Carry out a review of work progress on a regular basis and ensure jobs are done on time and within budget
- Manage, coordinate, and direct the activities of subcontractors and construction workers
- Work with architects and engineers to complete and submit drawings for permits
- Oversee and handle the negotiation of terms of agreements, drafting of contracts, and the acquisition of permits and licenses
- Analyze, manage, and mitigate risks
- Make sure that construction standards are of high quality and also ensure the use of proper construction techniques
- Project manage within critical timelines
Key qualifications:
- 7+ years in construction management, ideally with at least 2 years managing life sciences or laboratory facilities
- Experience with specialized laboratory systems (HVAC, clean rooms, chemical storage, utilities)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, since a Construction Manager may be required to interact with vendors, contractors, and subcontractors, as well as construction workers
- Strong ability to review and negotiate contracts
- Strong interpersonal skills to work efficiently and effectively with other professionals
- Excellent time management skills so that construction projects are completed within a given and critical time frame
- Strong decision-making skills to make effective plans and decisions to avoid problems, as well as solve emerging ones
- Physical strength and stamina to meet the demands of the work
- Skilled project management to develop the scope of the project and evaluate data to determine the various needs of the project
Salary/Pay Range:
Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $160,000 - $220,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
