Senior Counsel

As Senior Counsel, you’ll play a key role in building Science’s legal department and supporting the company across a wide variety of legal matters, including commercial agreements, product counseling, intellectual property, privacy, disputes, corporate governance, and healthcare regulatory issues. The right candidate will have specialized expertise in at least one of these areas and the ability to quickly learn new material and deliver practical guidance across the company. This role reports to the General Counsel.

Role responsibilities:

• Draft, negotiate, and close a wide range of commercial agreements across our US and international operations, including customer, distributor, supplier, services, and research collaboration agreements
• Serve as the primary legal partner to our European commercialization team, from early hospital conversations through contracting, site onboarding, and post-sale support, with a particular focus on hospital and clinic agreements in Germany and the UK
• Support US commercial contracting as the business scales, including agreements with health systems, research institutions, vendors, and manufacturing partners
• Navigate hospital procurement and tender processes on both sides of the Atlantic, including public procurement requirements at European state and university hospitals
• Advise on marketing and promotional content in the US and Europe, including EU MDR advertising restrictions, FDA promotional rules, national advertising regimes, and industry codes governing interactions with healthcare professionals
• Support the buildout and day-to-day operation of our Paris office and European corporate entities, including entity maintenance, local employment matters, vendor arrangements, and coordination of local counsel and advisors
• Partner with the regulatory, quality, and clinical teams on submissions, notified body interactions, and post-market obligations
• Advise on privacy and data protection, including GDPR, EU health data rules, HIPAA, and emerging state neural data laws
• Manage outside counsel across multiple jurisdictions
• Pitch in on product counseling, corporate, employment, and other general legal work as the company needs it
• Develop templates, policies, playbooks, and automations that enable a small team to support a company of this scale and complexity, including localized templates for European markets

Key qualifications:

• A JD and a New York or California license, or qualification in a European jurisdiction plus eligibility to register as in-house counsel in New York
• Substantial commercial contracting experience, including agreements with European counterparties and ideally with hospitals, health systems, or other public-sector customers
• A track record of taking on unfamiliar legal problems and quickly reaching pragmatic, defensible answers
• Strong skills and instincts around legal automation, including experience using LLMs to do substantive legal work
• Integrity, sound judgment, and levelheadedness under pressure

Preferred qualifications: 

• Commercial contracting experience at a company selling regulated hardware or medical devices, particularly into hospitals
• In-house or law firm experience in Germany, the UK, or France, whether in-country or from a US seat
• Working knowledge of EU MDR, including its restrictions on claims and pre-market promotion, and of national medical device advertising regimes such as Germany's Heilmittelwerbegesetz
• Professional fluency in German or French
• Familiarity with European market access and reimbursement, such as Germany's NUB and DRG pathways or NICE and NHS commissioning
• Experience supporting a non-US office, including local counsel management, employer-of-record arrangements, and works council or staff representative consultation
• Healthcare anti-corruption and fraud and abuse experience spanning the FCPA, the UK Bribery Act, the federal Anti-Kickback Statute, German anti-corruption provisions covering healthcare professionals, and the MedTech Europe Code of Ethical Business Practice
• Experience with medical device regulatory issues, neurotechnology, brain-computer interfaces, or implantable devices

Salary/Pay Range:

Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $200,000–$300,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
